摘要: We present a one-dimensional coupled ring resonator lattice exhibiting a variant of the non- Hermitian skin effect (NHSE) that we call the anomalous Floquet NHSE. Unlike existing approaches to achieving the NHSE by engineering gain and loss on different ring segments, our design uses fixed on-site gain or loss in each ring. The anomalous Floquet NHSE is marked by the existence of skin modes at every value of the Floquet quasienergy, allowing for broadband asymmetric transmission. Varying the gain/loss induces a non-Hermitian topological phase transition, reversing the localization direction of the skin modes. An experimental implementation in an acoustic lattice yields good agreement with theoretical predictions, with a very broad relative bandwidth of around 40%.

摘要: Slow-light devices are able to significantly enhance light-matter interaction due to the reduced group velocity of light, but a very low group velocity is usually achieved in a narrow bandwidth, accompanied by extreme sensitivity to imperfections that causes increased disorder-induced attenuation. Recent theories have suggested an ideal solution to this problem - unidirectional chiral photonic states, previously discovered in structures known as photonic topological insulators, not only resist backscattering from imperfections but can also be slowed down in the entire topological bandgap with multiple windings in the Brillouin zone. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of broadband topological slow light in a photonic topological insulator. When coupled with periodic resonators that form flat bands, the chiral photonic states can wind many times around the Brillouin zone, achieving an ultra-low group velocity in the entire topological bandgap. This demonstration extends the scope of topological photonics into slow light engineering and opens a unique avenue in the dispersion manipulation of chiral photonic states.

摘要: There are two prominent applications of the mathematical concept of topology to the physics of materials: band topology, which classifies different topological insulators and semimetals, and topological defects that represent immutable deviations of a solid lattice from its ideal crystalline form. While these two classes of topological phenomena have generally been treated as separate topics, recent experimental advancements have begun to probe their intricate and surprising interactions, in real materials as well as synthetic metamaterials. Topological lattice defects in topological materials offer a platform to explore a diverse range of novel phenomena, such as topological pumping via topological defects, embedded topological phases, synthetic dimensions, and non-Hermitian skin effects. In this Perspective, we survey the developments in this rapidly moving field, and give an outlook of its impact on materials science and applications.

摘要: The recent discovery of higher-order topology has largely enriched the classification of topological materials. Theoretical and experimental studies have unveiled various higher-order topological insulators that exhibit topologically protected corner or hinge states. More recently, higher-order topology has been introduced to topological semimetals. Thus far, realistic models and experimental verifications on higher-order topological semimetals are still very limited. Here, we design and demonstrate a three-dimensional photonic crystal that realizes a higher-order Dirac semimetal phase. Numerical results on the band structure show that the designed three-dimensional photonic crystal is able to host two four-fold Dirac points, the momentum-space projections of which at an edge are connected by higher-order hinge states. The higher-order topology can be characterised with the calculation of the \chi(6) topological invariant at different values of k_z. An experiment at microwave frequencies is also presented to measure the hinge state dispersion. Our work demonstrates the physical realization of a higher-order Dirac semimetal phase and paves the way to exploring higher-order topological semimetals phases in three-dimensional photonic systems.

摘要: Topological states, originated from interactions between internal degree of freedoms (like spin and orbital) in each site and crystalline symmetries, offer a new paradigm to manipulate electrons and classical waves. The accessibility of spin degree of freedom has motivated much attention on spin-related topological physics. However, intriguing topological physics related to atomic-orbital parity, another binary degree of freedom, have not been exploited since accessing approaches on atomic orbitals are not well developed. Here, we theoretically discover spectral splitting of atomic-orbital-parity-dependent second-order topological states on a designer-plasmonic Kagome metasurface, and experimentally demonstrate it by exploiting the easy controllability of metaatoms. Unlike previous demonstrations on Hermitian higher-order topological insulators, radiative non-Hermicity of the metasurface enables far-field access into metaatomic-orbital-parity-dependent topological states with polarized illuminations. The atomic-orbital parity degree of freedom may generate more intriguing topological physics by interacting with different crystalline symmetries, and promise applications in polarization-multiplexing topological lasing and quantum emitters.
